About the Parkway Northwest High School
Mentor Program:
At Parkway NW, students develop the knowledge and problem-solving skills necessary for responding peacefully to the violence in their communities and globally. Integral to any student’s success in school and in life, however, are the relationships developed with adults. Therefore, in an effort to supply every ninth grade student with the support they need, all Parkway freshmen are offered the services of a tutor and/or mentor.
A student is matched with a mentor depending on gender, interests, career aspirations, and location. A mentor offers advice and a positive influence and is an adult ally and friend to help them navigate these challenging and formative years. We ask that mentors make at least a one year commitment, contacting the student once a week (phone or email) and meeting monthly. These meetings may involve participating in a common interest, such as sports or theater, sharing with a student skills or interests that you may have, or participating in a special activity such as a poetry slam or an art project organized by our Community Development center.
The gift of your time and wisdom will not only be rewarding for both you and the student, but also strengthens and sustains the school community.
